Only way this would make sence is if she got 1 billion years in prison reduced to 1 million years of torture.

Wow now she can roam freely wherever she want

In all my years on this subreddit, I think this is the most grievous PP I've ever seen. The difference in what would happen to a man in this case is so obvious I can't even put into words.

As a Canadian i'm not surprised by this reduced sentence. I love a lot about my country but are justice system is a joke.

We have this guy who decapitated a person on a bus and eat him. This man is now walking freely among us. He is schizophrenic and promises to take his meds so all is good.

Man I'm STILL nervous on large/long bus rides because of that. Hate people sitting behind me because I'm always thinking "They could come cut my head off while I'm asleep. I'll be gone forever they'd be out in a few years"

Canada really is a joke of a nation, on so many levels. I feel bad for the few remaining sane people who are stuck there surrounded by lunatic legislation, lunatic extremist government and lunatics who support both of those.

That case is completely different. Dude has one insanely violent and gruesome episode. He was sentenced to a mental hospital for years. He improved a lot and never had any significant incidences while detained. For the last few years of his sentence, he was regularly allowed to roam around his town unsupervised. Did he eat anyone? Did he kill anyone? No. He went to libraries and parks, then returned back to the facility when he was due.

If dozens of doctors, judges, and other professionals have deemed him not to be a risk, then he isn't. Do you think they'd all risk their careers over a cannibal? People complain about the stigma around mental health, yet here is a patient that has had his disease make him commit the most gruesome crime, and he has worked to prove himself to society. This isn't the 1400s where you could chain him in a dungeon and leave him to rot. He has rights, and if he's proven that he's not violent and will continue treatment, then he should be free, with regular medical visits to check he's ok she still taking meds.

Negligent manslaughter has a longer sentence than that, mental health aside he still murdered someone and should've served a manslaughter sentence at minimum.

Li's trial commenced on March 3, 2009, with Li pleading not criminally responsible (aka insanity defense). This means he accepted that the offence occurred but claimed that he was unable to form the necessary mental element or mens rea.[11] The psychiatrist said that Li performed the attack because God's voice told him McLean was a force of evil and was about to execute him. The presiding judge, John Scurfield, accepted the diagnosis, and ruled that Li was not criminally responsible for the killing.[1] Li was remanded to the Selkirk Mental Health Centre.[21]

It wasn't manslaughter.

I understand that, Im saying that claiming insanity drove you to do it is similar to accidentally doing it. If its truly unintentional then it should be treated similarly, he still committed a horrific crime and should be punished equal to that of someone else who didnt mean to kill someone. He neglected to get help for his mental illness and took a life, 9 years is not enough for an "accident".

So much for Canada being the nice neighbor next door...some fucked up people there it seems...

Canada's identity is, "we are better than the US". It's an empty vacuous identity. Our news stations report more US news than Canadian news.

Hmmm...it seems the reasoning is based off she only concealed bodies but was never convicted of killing the babies...so it’s a hard one to figure out...she was only convicted of hiding remains but not anything else

[–]Accend0 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Yeah but she initially received a stiffer sentence because they were all her kids and it's not hard to imagine that they wound up dead by design rather than by coincidence.

[+]chazo1361 points 7 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Unfortunately the court was to decide if she was guilty of hiding corpses, which she was, they weren’t deliberating on if she killed them or killed them via neglect. They have to work with the facts they have, not just speculation on what may have happened as there apparently wasn’t enough evidence to charge her with multiple murders originally.

[–]Accend0 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I understand that but that is exactly why we give judges a certain amount of leeway when it comes to sentencing.

The sentence she received was steep but well within the bounds of reason when you consider the details of the case. Even then, it wasn't as steep as it would have been if she had been charged with and found guilty of murder.

I understand what the appeal judge was saying but I, personally, don't think it applies here and imo was a miscarriage of justice.

Where exactly do you suppose the woman came into possession of six dead babies?

[–]camletoejoe 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Mass Murderer Released from Prison. Little to no reason given.
