Multiple reports about Jeff Bezos today including talk about his divorce. Multiple reporters commenting that Mrs Bezos will get half his wealth and that she deserves it. Really? What did she do for 80 billion??

I'm usually mad at the idea that the woman gets half, but in this case I actually think I agree. They got together when he wasn't wealthy. They started the company together. She worked, from all accounts I've seen, every bit as hard as he did until the company was basically printing money. By that point, he'd shifted to a more decision focused role and relied on her as a confidant. From every angle I've looked at it, she is as responsible as he is for the success of Amazon and the money it made, and therefore I can get behind her getting her fair share of the marital assets she directly assisted in the creation of.

I like to fight the bias of divorce as much as anyone else, but this isn't the hill to die on unless new information comes out that invalidates her contributions to Amazon.

No one deserves that kind of money. This kind of money can't possibly come from your own work and productivity.

The only way to get that kind of money is to take your cut from the work and productivity of literally millions of other people down the social hierarchy, down the supply pyramid.

So if you think it is obscene that someone can get this kind of money from one other person just because property rights happen to be enforced this way, then it is even more obscene to get this kind of money from millions of people just because property rights happen to be enforced that way.

Fix the latter, and the former becomes a non-issue for free.
