Among other things Karen discusses how highlighting the plight of women and children helped to achieve labor rights for (mostly) men during the early 20th century.

Another interesting event from the time period not mentioned in the lecture: the Ludlow massacre, in which a dozen or so wives and children of coal miners were slaughtered by guardsmen working for the Rockefellers. This event caused about 1000x more national outrage than the previous several decades of men being slaughtered en masse in other labor battles. There was so much anger that Rockefeller hired a man named Ivy Lee -- essentially the first "public relations" expert -- to smooth things over.

So even in "patriarchies" where men are supposedly "privileged" we can see clearly that the lives of women are perceived to have much more value.
