“I really dislike being patronised as if I am a minority,” Hume told the ABC’s Q&A on Monday night. “[Women] have to work for what we want. And for women that don’t get there, the trick is work that little bit harder. Don’t get bitter, get better. Work harder.”

The faxt that people have taken that as a slight at women is just insane

Her sentiments are worthy of respect.

How many women join the Liberal party and run for seats as compared to the Labor party? I wonder if a lot of the discrepancy has to do with more women being left leaning?

I think the root cause is something a little different:

A few months ago I saw a study (which I haven't been able to find again since - argh! Does anyone else have it?) which showed that, when you look at the subset of the population who are actively interested in, and well-informed on, current affairs and politics - well there were 2-3 times more men than women in that group.

So if the people who choose to go into politics come from the segment of the population which is actively interested in politics, then you'd expect to see the mix of candidates reflect this mix, i.e. 2-3 times more men than women.

The difference comes from the fact that the left-leaning parties (like Labor in Australia) are determined to override this natural gender imbalance and enforce equality of outcomes on candidates, while the right wing & conservative parties (like the Liberal party in Australia) think merit is more important than forced equal outcomes, hence they reject the concept of quotas.

Hm, I appreciate your input. I would agree just from my own experience that men are more actively interested in politics than women. I don't agree on quotas either. Having said that, I think it would be difficult to make the blanket case that women with positions of influence and power within Labor ranks are lacking the skills to do the job. Maybe the case could be made individually in some cases, but the same could be said for the men.
I'm all for merit based appointments. However, just because a woman is appointed, doesn't mean it isn't merit based (the same case as people make for men who are appointed).

we need more of this. Just not here, this has nothing to do with mens rights. If the feminism subreddits were not so mean and nasty this would fit rather well.

If she's calling for actual hard work, I am all for that.

Damn, she's sexy!
