My older brother is a cop and an all round upstanding guy loved and respected by everyone around him. I don’t get to see him very often due to living on separate continents because of work so it’s always a treat to see him and the whole family when I can.
This past weekend was our grandfather’s funeral and after the reception, I noticed him putting some food on his plate when his wife hit his hand and chastised him like a child for eating too much meat. I was beyond shocked but I didn’t want to make a scene so I called him to the side and asked him why his wife would do something like that at a time and place like this. He was reluctant at first but after swearing me to absolute secrecy he eventually opened up and told me all about it. How she belittles him and treats him like this all the time. Later he even showed me some bruises on his body from some of the more serious bearings. He has never laid a hand on her.
I honestly don’t know what to do. I’ve flown back to where I live and am now thousands of miles away from him and I feel powerless to help him. At least when I was there I knew he was safe because his wife wouldn’t try anything with me there in the same house. I want to help but I don’t even know where to start and what impact this will have on our relationship going forward if he feels I will have betrayed his trust
