Working as a first responder, we run into this all the time. People always resort to faking it, when getting caught shoplifting, or being involved in a minor accident attempting to make a case for a potential law suit down the road, etc.

Silly as it sounds, a surefire way to determine faking or not, is to lay them on their back and then pick up one of their arms, hovering the hand over their face. Let go of that hand, and if they’re faking it, their hand will conveniently fall to the side around their face instead of onto their face as gravity would dictate. Not necessarily a party trick but probably useful if you find yourself surrounded by attention seekers.
