That was actually murder and I agree. There is something though that's being missed. Not all the details are there, but from what I can infer. She got custody of the kids in part because she foiled several complaints against him with her colleagues. I can't see every incidence of DV happening at her school. They smut have lived together at some point. He didn't just lose custody if he's dropping off Christmas presents, he was denied visitation (whether it was court ruling or visitation interference by her IDK), otherwise, wouldn't you just give the kids their presents when you had them?

Let's assume that she was abusive (for the sake of argument and for a comment at the end). She used the system against him and he had no legal remedy or perceived no legal remedy. Wouldn't it be similar then to an abused woman who saw no legal remedy and is continuing to be abused and she kills her abuser?

What was the difference? Well, an abused woman doesn't kill herself after she kills her husband. She (maybe) finally tells the police and government she was abused or uses it as an excuse for the trial. He never saw that as a viable option. That's something worth discussing.
