Discussion of unmarried age of women in 1980 vs 2015 in r/dataisbeautiful quickly breaks down into "I should do whatever makes me happy". Wonder how many are women and how many of them are motivated by the Sex in the City/radfem 'do whatever makes you happy and sod your family' type message.

It’s official – women are nicer than men. Is this really science? [Or: "We don't mind innate, biological gender differences as long as they make us superior to men!"]

I thought this comment was particularly relevant. The user is explaining why people splitting up is bad for kids, not why marriage is bad:

Yep, I'm a guy that married a woman that made more than me and has a degree. After losing my job back in the recession, much of our marital breakdown came from my unemployment. I now live on the other side of the planet, divorced, she's gone working mom of course back in the states because she qualifies for a nice fat job. Now my daughter has no father and she has little time for life balance. My daughter is showing loads of bad behaviors now, at the age of six, the solution? Medication. Just turn the dysfunctional bastards into medicated zombies- SOCIETY FIXED! But at least the average woman now has more opportunities than the average man...

A lot of the comments seemed to care little that marriage means you are less likely to separate, or that separation is bad for kids. Their happiness seemed to be the main priority.

"I should do what makes me happy"

People don't know what makes them happy. If they did there would be a lot more happy people.

[–]KingRobotPrince 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

How about "I should do what the media tells me makes me happy"?

[–]iainmf 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Probably more like "I should do what feels good at the time"

Generally, women care about work/life balance and only want to be happy, and will break up a family in order to serve themselves and their wants and desires.

Generally, men care about their families and do what needs to be done to preserve the family, for whats best for their family, most times sacrificing wants and desires for the needs of their family, hoping that once in a while they can do what they want to do.

I doubt movies have any serious impact over our basic instincts.

[–]KingRobotPrince 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Probably not, but marriage and such isn't really a basic instinct.

Our basic instinct would be to form some sort of ape-like societal structure with alpha and beta males and females. We live in a society where our basic instincts are constantly managed in order to be civilised.

Movies and other media have a real and observable effect on how people act.

It's quite possible that the media and feminist ideas have led women to resist settling down and getting married, believing that it somehow gives them more freedom, at the cost of children and the family.

Finding a partner and caring about little beings is. More so in women, but also in men.

[–]KingRobotPrince 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Not really finding a partner (assuming you mean more than a sexual partner), instinctually speaking we would be more likely to live in a much more communal way. People would likely be poly-amorous (if actually amorous at all) and have multiple children by multiple women. We would also receive affection from multiple sources, including same-sex, so pairing would be far less common.

If our instinct was to pair up, then we would not find other women attractive once we had found a mate.

I saw this thread, skimmed the top comments...

And I just couldn't believe how everyone was focusing on the shift in age that women were tending to get married, not that the rate was going down so dramatically as a whole.

This is the decline of Western Civilization in a nutshell, right there.
