Custody is 100% or 0%, no such thing as joint. Japan is also known for being a child abduction safe haven for Japanese nationals. So even if you have 100% custody in the US where your child was born and raised, the Japanese parent can take the child back to Japan and will not send the child back home.

There was one case where a Japanese mother slipped up... she went back to Hawaii (or Guam?) to renew her US driver's license, got held up and arrested. The child was still in Japan and the courts made a deal... if the child is back in the US by Xmas, she would be released, else, jail time. (need citation, but AFAIK this is how it went).

I handled my divorce and custody out of court, lost all my money and belongings, but I get to see my children every weekend. I am very lucky, many other horror stories out there. I was really good with the parents and immediate family, so I was able to talk to them so they can talk sense into their daughter.
