Between 1.5% and 7.5% of men are estimated to be falsely accused of rape at some point during their lives (Note that those numbers include an estimate of accusations that never make it to the police.)

If a woman tells you to man up, tell her to woman down.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

naw, just tell them to fuck off lol

[–]Lethn 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago* (30 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, that's great, but you won't let men talk about feminists and women who try to ruin their lives or emotionally abuse them will you? That would be sexist or it's not an issue. I wonder if some on the left have finally realised just how unpopular they are and are trying to soften feminism's image as an ideology for man haters?

[–]blueoak9 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (29 children) | Copy Link

He made a side swipe at the men and WOMEN who are hair-trigger ready to tell men the man up, and that would include feminists and their male privilege narrative.

[–]Biffingston -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link

So there is no privilege to being male?

Seriously?

There are privileges and disadvantages to being either gender. It's not all bad, it's not all good, it just is.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

There is no male privilege because there is no legal backing to it.

There are disadvantages and advantages to being male but not privileges.

For example: men are usually stronger than women, but a man who so much as hits a woman back in self defense is absolutely obliterated by the courts and media. Who has the "privilege" there?

[–]Biffingston 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There is no male privilege because there is no legal backing to it.

Read this and when you know what the basic terms mean then I'll talk to you.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Male_privilege

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Male privilege is often examined alongside the concept of patriarchy within the feminist movement[citation needed], while men's rights activists dispute the existence of male privilege and patriarchy in modern western society, and believe that men are often victimized and disadvantaged relative to women.

any evidence for this?

[–]the_unseen_one 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

Well, I have never experienced any privilege, but you can feel free to point them out to me. All the male "privilege" I see referred to is shit that hasn't existed widespread since the sixties.

[–]Biffingston 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

checks your post history

Oh, I see now. how's going your own way going for you?

[–]the_unseen_one 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

Great. The greatest gift my ex, who I planned to marry and drown in my love and kindness for my life, gave me was realizing what women are really like. From there I came to realize the shit hand many men have the deal with, and it opened my eyes on a whole segment of humanity that I had ignored my whole life. In a roundabout way, she was responsible for me going from a woman worshipping feminist to an independent MRA. Without a doubt it's a harder road, but it's better than the one I would have treaded previously.

Regardless, I realize that was all just an effort to avoid actually having to defend your claims in any way. So again, please point said privilege out to me. Contrary to what you might think, I arrived at my current ideals based off of evidence and logic, and I am still fully open to amending what I think if someone can make a good argument and support it in some way. The ball is in your court bud. Avoiding having to prove your point not only makes you look like a jackass, but cements what I think further since nobody has been capable of challenging my current renaissance.

good for you man. I'm not a MGTOW myself, but it seems like for you it helped you get out of a bad place and grow a spine. Props.

[–]Biffingston 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

I'm not fighting him because it's pretty obvious he's going to lash out at anything and anyone that disagrees with him. It's obvious that the disagreement only validates his childish behavior in his eyes so why would I enable his obnoxious and childish behavior when there's a just slightly above zero chance that i'll make him change his mind?

Also, it's bitterly amusing that as a man "Going his own way." He apparently never left the ex emotionally speaking...

The guy really needs to see a therapist, he doesn't have issues, he's got himself a lifetime subscription.

TL;DR It's obvious he's drunk the koolaide.. what would I accomplish?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

talking about bitter people, why are you even here? You seem to have feminist leanings considering you cited WIKIPEDIA of all places and it was in regards to male privilege. Live a little.

[–]Biffingston 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago* (18 children) | Copy Link

Just because I have feminist leanings doesn't mean I'm not also for men's rights. Just because I don't want to tear down women doesn't mean I'm not for men.

And this is the bullshit attitudes I was specifically talking about wanting to avoid when dealing with mister AWLT.

Please tell me more about the right way to be a man. /s

[–]Apexbreed 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Our entire fucking planet needs to "man up" a notch or two. I.e. we are all too sensitive and would benefit as a species if we learned to maintain respect/compassion for others, and stopped being so emotionally frail at the same time.

[–]jackjmil64 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When someone tells you to "man up", here is what they are really saying: "I am too psychologically weak to deal with the discomfort I feel when you share your pain. So shut up so I can feel better."

[–]elebrin 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

On the one hand, the need to get help is a real thing and I think people should do it. I also think that issues of health, including issues of mental health, are very private and personal and that people should keep those things to themselves.

If you need a doctor, therapist, personal gym trainer, whatever, there is no shame in that but you probably shouldn't advertise it. There's no shame in getting help but those things just aren't to be shared with anyone.

[–]tothecatmobile 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Do you think people who have diabetes or cancer should keep it to themselves?

[–]elebrin 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

If I had either of those diseases, I would keep it to myself. I took a lot criticism when I was eating less to lose weight. When people asked me why I was eating the way I was, my response was "I do what I want." I never gave them a real reason, because it was personal and they wanted to harass me about it.

If I had cancer and it was going to kill me without question, I would tell my immediate family only and then only the two or three I trust not to spread it around. I'd also put in my two weeks notice at work with no real reasoning behind it. If I was treatable, then I would discuss my options with the personnel management folks only. All my team lead needs to know is that I am off the job for medical reasons, and nothing else.

[–]tothecatmobile 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

you're describing what you would do, not what everyone should do.

[–]elebrin 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, because I don't think it's right for me to decide for everyone else what they should do. I can only say what I would do for myself and what I wish others would do.

[–]tothecatmobile 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Out of sight, out of mind has never really worked very well for anything.

[+]AaronStack91 points 9 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

I also think that issues of health, including issues of mental health, are very private and personal and that people should keep those things to themselves.

I think part of the problem is that a lot of people do not know that is okay to seek help because every time they reach out to someone (men in particular) they are told to "man up". Part of "maning up" is not getting help from doctors, therapists, and other professionals.

I know it may be uncomfortable to hear, but there is a reason why people are trying to be more open with their mental illness. It is because it ISN'T talked about and many people don't know they should/can get help.

[–]elebrin 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think part of the problem is also that if you reach out then everyone will know and judge you for it. If it's possible to get help in secret and keep it that way, then more people might actually do it. The stigma around mental health is already there and not going away. Maybe we need to look for a way around that problem.

To me, part of ""manning up" is eating some fucking crow, admitting that you have a problem, and dealing with it rationally. Dealing with it rationally only involves getting help if, say, getting help won't affect your family life or work life. Manly or otherwise it's the adult thing to do.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wonder if anyone has considered that maybe he avoided talking about it for so long because he was concerned if he did, the media would be talking about it nonstop.

The problem isn't that men WANT to "man up", it's that any man who seeks out mental health assistance is automatically looked down on. That was the entire premise of "The Sopranos", a strong man who seeks out mental health care is automatically "weak".
