If the other employees (women) didn't help the guy by standing beside him and taking his side, you can be sure that people would have tried to "help" her.

Even then one woman criticised him at the end.

It's just sad that men are seen as the perpetrators even when in the right and need social guards.

I'll probably get downvoted for this, and she did say something about the parking lot, I don't really know what happened, but:

At least in NY, it's not shoplifting until you walk out of the store. And when you do, if they're not the shop owner, they actually don't have any right to detain you.

Onetime when I worked at Best Buy, I was covering the front desk when you walk in the door (they're called Loss Prevention, and that wasn't my job, I was just covering it). Some kid took off out of the store with a video game. His friends were parked in the back of the parking lot in a running car. He got about halfway to the car, and when he saw I was a step behind him about to jump on him, he turned around, threw the game at me and took off.

We reviewed the tape, he didn't actually get away with anything. I retrieved the only item he was trying to steal. I got written up and almost fired despite never even touching the kid. You're not allowed to chase people out of the store. You're definitely not allowed to touch people, that's the only reason I didn't get fired
