Any news program that's driven by TV ratings for profit is always gonna push sensationalist and misleading garbage.

CNN is pretty terrible, but they are far from the only ones, the most obvious other example would be FOX.

So you got garbage from the left and garbage from the right, how do we know what true?

For me it was when I looked up at a TV at a bar. It said '' breaking news'' in big red letters.

And underneath that it said trumps daughters fashion line is getting dumped by some outlet I don't go e a Fuck about.

What kinda shit is that, it's not breaking news.

It's interesting. Trump Effect, 100%, btw, to answer OP's question.

Here you have an organization, with "news" in their name. They purposely interleave opinion/editorial content with news reporting, such that they've blurred the lines for the average American. Prior to this election cycle, most people would go "oh - CNN - that's a news channel" -- and just accept it blindly.

But once the election cycle started, people were hip to the game. They noticed that CNN seemed to have an anti-Trump slant, but didn't know why. It was later revealed that they are basically on the take by the DNC. They had Donna Brazile as a staffer, and in that role, she "sometimes gets the questions in advance" - so her obvious high integrity move was to forward them on to Podesta. CNN later fired her, but it was sorta after the fact, and didn't really impact anyone, other than for the minor mea culpa it served. They have Wolf Blitzer dancing at Hillary's DNC nomination, although some say he was just letting off steam... most people, who work in the industry, once the shit is over, they want to get the fuck out of there, and fast. But not Wolf. He's 68 years old, for fucks sake, and likely normally in bed by 8:30. But for Hillary, he danced to the wee hours. But why? Because he's rejoicing. That's why. CNN later was found to have staged questions at a town hall. I lost track, was this once or twice this happened? Either way, it's all a fucking scam.

So Trump -- in his usual Trump manner, called them out on it. During the campaign, he was softer at first.... leaving it as "the dishonest media" - and called them out for not zooming out to show how large the crowds were. Perhaps intentionally to not allow there to be a contrast with Hillary's not-so-large turnouts at her rallies.

Basically, CNN worked diligently against Trump the entire time. And we all know Trump is a counter-puncher. He won't punch first, but he will punch back 10x if he gets punched.

So how does that play out? First, right around election day, the Dems started crying about how people set up fake news websites and shared those fake stories on social media like Facebook, to discredit Hillary. But, as they were complaining using the label "Fake News", Trump seized that label and stuck it on CNN.

In a Jim Acosta CNN exchange at a press conference a couple weeks back, he summed it up perfectly: "The public doesn't believe you people, anymore. Now maybe I had something to do with that? I don't know.... But if you were straight, I would be your biggest fan, your biggest booster, even for bad stories about me."

The pill that Trump just planted there was simple. He's not against taking a bad story, if it's a bad story, but he's not going to let them keep up with their constant anti-Trump angle.

And what that means is pretty simple. CNN is on a downhill trending slope. The viewers are going elsewhere. That will take a couple ratings cycles to prove evident, but then, the amount they can sell their advertising for has to come down as well. They can't charge top $ for ads anymore. That squeezes revenue streams. Once the revenue streams start to squeeze, they have a couple options, which largely rely on the business model that their parent (Time Warner) decides to implement.

They are treated as their own P&L. In that case, they will have to start cutting costs to keep down as revenues decrease.

or

They will take in subsidies from the other more profitable brands in the Time Warner portfolio in order to keep them afloat.

or (least likely option)

They'll get sold off or spun off, to be acquired by someone else, stand on their own, or ??

It will be one of these. They simply can't (won't) stay afloat financially on their own.

Granted, their broadcast/subscriber fee deals with the cable/sat companies, and advertising, makes up most of their income. The advertising revenue will drop fast, but the subscriber fees are usually yearly deals, so they will decline, just not as quickly.

Another issue, is CNN gets a lot of their subscribers through CNN International -- and it's like this -- if an international carrier wants to carry a US news provider, they're probably only going to carry one, and if you're going to only carry one, you had best pick the one that's most middle of the road... not left leaning MSNBC, not right leaning Fox News, so they default themselves into this. BUT GUESS WHAT.... now they're outed as being almost as left-leaning as MSNBC. That may (or will) change the channel lineups chosen by these international customers. They WILL likely lose deals over their behavior this past year.

And now Trump doubles down and calls them "Fake News" -- wait, scratch that, "Very Fake News" now. And people in the public can see how right he is about this. Trump says "look - fake news... very fake news" and every time he says it, CNN's credibility drops a little more.

I just realized how long this post is.

Let me TL/DR: Yes. Trump Effect. He is counter-punching for all their misdeeds directed at him during the election, and he will take them down.

i'm hoping that this clickbait culture is just civilization-wide growing pains trying to deal with the technology explosion we're dealing with. humans evolve at a rate about a million times slower than current technology, so it's gonna take a bit to get used to it. i'm optimistic, though, we seem to have faced the absolutely most dangerous problems well enough.

Its interesting that its called "consumer perception" but its not asking consumers what their perception is...its asking if they've "heard anything negative" about the brand latemy....which could signify changes in consumer perception but would also include things like a small number of people saying very negative things a lot.

I wonder why they chose such an indirect measurement, surely they wouldn't just cast around for statistics until they find one that seems to fit their narrative regardless of whether its meaningful or not?
