Old way of thinking, which is exploited ruthlessly by women to punish their ex husbands for whatever imaginary wrongs he might have committed and to secure their financial independence. The "old" part of it is that the law was originally created to allow women freedom from marriage, at a time most of them didn't work circa the 50's. For whatever reason usually abuse of some sort and the ability to not end up destitute. Of course any system created by human beings can be exploited and corrupted extremely quickly and efficiently hence the situation we're in now.

There is a loophole. If the woman in question or man if it's palimony, attempts to end the life of the party which is being sued for alimony/palimony, said reward is rendered null.
