Your mistake is in the assumption that a woman's decision to divorce is based on logic and not based on feels/unrealistic future expectations.

I doubt many women expect that divorce is going to be a downgrade for them.

You're treating it like a rational process. It's not, it's an emotional one. Women aren't sitting around at home with spreadsheets and flow charts, weighing the pros and cons of making bank from a Beta ex while raising his kids apart from him. They're watching trash television and wallowing in that feeling that their husbands are weak and pathetic, and talking to their girlfriends about how unhaaaaapy they are, and they're thinking about that hot guy they met that made them feel the way they used to feel about their husbands.

Just like The Wall isn't something rational - it's a bunch of chemicals that influence the emotional need to secure a provider-mate once social cues have let the subconscious know the Wall-bound girl is losing SMV.

Women primarily make decisions from an emotional place. You'll never understand these decisions if you don't keep this in mind.

There are many issues that influence a modern day wife to trigger the divorce:

Delayed marriage puts women into a courtship state for many years. These are the years when she gets attention and validation, the years when her SMV is high, and so on. She's in the zone, which leads to entitlement, for obvious reasons. She's in control. Also, she doesn't deal with rough patches, other than changing the boyfriend. If she's mildly attractive, opportunities are many. There's no incentive for her to develop skills to deal with relationship issues. For example, compromise is not in her vocabulary.
Then, near 30, she more or less reluctantly settles down. Her reason is to get married (not be married, get married) and have kids.
After the kids are born, she resents her new life. Kids come first, she comes second or third, if hubby is career driven. So now, her entitlement isn't fulfilled. She starts dreaming about her old glory days and she now resents her husband. To make matters worse, many married men become bland (beta), let themselves go, etc. For some, resentment coupled with postpartum hormonal changes trigger a very low libido as well. Finally, if she had to somewhat sacrifice her career for having children, which she worked hard in her 20s to have, lead her to further resent her husband and family life. Her life is mostly sexless, passionless, routine, sleep deprived, etc.
In her "unfulfilled" mindset, she's easy prey to any attention, being from a coworker, a cute guy/girl at the grocery store checking her out, etc.
Under our law system she knows she's likely to keep the kids and the house. She'll get child support and she now gets to parent the way she sees fit, without compromising with a husband. After the divorce, it will be like in her old glory days: her way or the highway.

Simply put, modern women, infused with feminism and unconstrained by social stigma that used to be attached to divorce, aren't willing (or are unaware) to make the sacrifices and compromises that come natural in married life. This is why women's unhappiness is the leading cause of divorce. Not infidelity, abuse or addictions.

I'm in my 30s and I see this pattern around me all the time.

Research shows that women cope better post-divorce than men do. Most women are significantly happier with their lives five years later

That's because most men have to pay alimony and child support and never get to see their children.

This is stupid. Why is society wasting money "researching" this?
