The TV licence fee is an annual base fee that you have to pay to watch any TV, satelittle/cable are optional extras. Satellite is more popular than cable in the U.K. (Biggest company probably being Sky). The TV licence fee gets you 'freeview'. Back before digitial TV was widespread (id say 10-15 years ago but I'm Scottish so could have been earlier), your TV licence would have got you channels 1-5 (BBC1&2, ITV/STV, Channel 4, and Channel 5). Now, with digital TV you get lots more channels and 'red button' features. Paying extra for Sky is pretty much paying for cable in the states with bundles etc, where you get even more channels.

Paying for a TV licence funds the BBC and other media. I feel like we are missing something as being jailed over TV licenses seems extreme.
