The history of birth control development is an extremely messy one for sure, and the shit that those women went through during the initial studies in the 50's was no doubt absolutely horrific. However, any discussion on the development of birth control must include three additional aspects:

It makes absolute scientific sense to start the study of birth control by focusing on women. Women typically release 1-2 eggs per cycle, while men release millions of sperm with each ejaculation. If the goal is to prevent pregnancy, then it makes a lot more sense to prevent the release of 1-2 objects than it does to try to prevent the release of millions of things.
Doctors and scientists have been looking into the possibility of a male-based type of birth control since the 1970's, but some of the earliest attempts were met with furious protests by feminists who felt that women alone should hold control over conception. It's a lot harder to trap a man when he has at his disposal a birth control method that the woman has no control over at all.
Not only are women in no way forced to use birth control, but plenty of them use for reasons that have nothing to do with pregnancy.
