My barbers swear and yell at each other and drink beer and smoke and blast death metal. I love my barber shop but they are the opposite of health advisors.

Barbers can be very wise. If you're giving a teenage boy a fashionable haircut, and you know from the signs in his scalp that he'll be bald at 30, there's wisdom to be gained from this, and gentleness and empathy towards the boy even if he's a bit of a dick at his current age. With their regular customers, barbers see the aging process in stopmotion, like that video that makes everyone think deep thoughts about life and death. Barbers have what it takes that strangers let them touch their scalps - tact, the common touch - the metaphors are literal.

So there's more going on than haircuts in a barbershop. The activists who campaign against men-only barbershops aren't expending all that energy to close a gender gap in haircuts. There's no shortage of places for women to get a haircut. There is a shortage of places where men can have the kinds of conversations that go on in a barbershop.

People are offended because they only were trained to have a specialty in mens haircuts?

How is that sexism when overwhelming majority of salons cater to females.
