What are your thoughts on Mental Illness and the Suicidal?

Mental illness, like all chornic illness, must be managed. when managed correctly you can live a pretty normal life.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the illness itself and human nature, most are not willing to put for the effort to be in a healthy mental state.

Hell, over half the newbies posting here are suffering from depression. unmanaged it really fucks with your ability to get things done.

In general, I have no sympathy for people who don't put forth the effort to make themselves healthy. mostly because no-one else can do it for you.

That being said, even with proper management it can be difficult. I was born with hearing loss. 50% in both ears. for the first 30 years of my life, I couldn't use hearing aides due to the specific nature of my hearing loss or the ones that would work were far too expensive for me to afford. But, for the first 30 years of my life, I could only talk to someone if they were within 5 ft of me and I could pick up 1 out of 3 words on a good day. Despite this I went and graduated to one of the best engineering schools and built a career in management.

This is not, and would not have been, possible without owning my problem. It was my responsibility to ensure that I have everything I need to do my job and interact with those around me. no-one else is going to do it for me, and relying on the kindness of others is a fools errand.

What do you feel is effective treatment, if any?

Depends. but for the most part I would say self awareness and being willing to do what needs to be done. how you get to that state is anyone's guess. I know how I did it, but that won't work for everyone

if you were faced with someone who was suicidal, how would you react?

Depends on my relationship with them. Random strangers I would either call the police or a local hospital for them to deal with it. It's not my problem and I don't want it to be my problem so i'll call someoen who is more equiped to deal with it. IE: the police. because they will take that person to the hospital and put them under 24hr survelience to deal with it. Long term: It's not my problem even more so.

For someone I am close with, It will largely depend on their attitude. if I know them to be self aware and working on it and just in a bind, I will do everything I can to help. otherwise: not my problem. I can't fix it for you.

There are people who have serious mental illness and they need to be taken seriously. Some of them just cannot be saved.

There are people that aren't mentally ill, but are frustrated with life and will act out symptoms usually associated with mental illness. An example from TRP, I have known many alpha-widows that have sunk into suicidal thoughts when they were otherwise pretty well adjusted. I can think of two that completed that journey. Most of them just need to take the journey to acceptance.

Finally, there are those that have found a very rational reason for their actions--perhaps they are about to get "found out" or prison or whatever.

Mental illness can cause people to be suicidal. And yes, everyone who doesn't suffer from Antisocial personality disorder is liable to develop depression that means even true alpha males can develop it.

Read up on psychology. They can develop it. True about beta males though.
