I would be perfectly fine with this if it wasn't so easy for a man to be put on the sex offenders list simply by being accused of a crime. Even if acquitted with a large amount of evidence supporting his innocence, he could still find himself on the list.

No other offences are mentioned. Why just sex offenders?

If these people are such a threat (they aren't) then they should be in prison, or at the very least not have a passport.

This scarlet letter treatment is an admission that these people are just like everyone else, but they pissed off the wrong people (feminists and tradcons).

Otherwise, the passports of frauds should surely be the first to be marked, as they are most likely to be the class of ex-cons to have the skills to harm another country's residents. And since homicide is far more serious than any sex offence, surely people who have committed homicide should have theirs marked next in line.

In fact, why not just list every state and federal conviction on the passport?

Or is aggravated assault not hot-button enough to care about?

Aren't felons already barred from international travel anyway? Which countries allow foreign felons into their territories? This bill sounds redundant.

Scary precedent the USA is making here. Americans are blind to anything that doesn't directly impact them. Allowing this sort of segregation should disturb every single American Citizen. If the President means what he says about criminal justice and prison reform he will veto this bill.

I'm from Europe and have been following what is going on in US with this sex offender hysteria for some time. I have no much sympathy for those who molest real children or rape but it seem that this label is handed out like candy for sexting or having sex on a public beach or what ever. In my country the age of consent is 16 but it's unlikely to get even prison time unless the younger party is like 14 or younger. Now I don't condone older guys taking advantage of teens or anything but it seem in US things are out of proportion. If you speed a little you get caution, speed little more and you get fined, mount a rocket on your car and ram it through group of pedestrians and you'll go to prison. There seems to be some proportionality there like there should be.

Now, when it comes to sex in US, "speed a little" (with, say 17,99 year old) means that the law will fck you in the ass for the rest of your life unless you apply for a asylum in some foreign country that is not so hysterical about sex. Some MILF from Florida actually was granted an asylum in Canada because she was convicted to 30 years in prison for having sex with a 16-year old dude.

Even when it comes to rapist and those who have molested real kids certain principals of justice should apply. When the time in prison is done the debt to the society is paid in full. Period. There's no need to publicly shame anyone unless the person has some serious personality disorder which makes him danger to the society, in which case the right place for him/her would actually be in mental hospital. In criminology it is very well known that inability to integrate back in the society will lead to more offending.

Everything US is doing with its' crime problem contradicts with scientific research. US is the Saudi Arabia of the western countries.
