"Because I think that despite men having a more privileged role historically..." what people who say things like this often fail to acknowledge is that men had more responsibilities, as well, to counterbalance any "privilege", from being drafted to war to being held solely responsible for providing for the family

Women were not historically given the same expectations or held to the same standards as men, so ultimately any "privilege" men had over women, he was still paying for in some way. It's not like men ever had a sweet life just for being male

I agree for most of it, but it was still legal to rape and beat your wife in 1920.

There are stuff that went too far. But not all men used these laws anyway.

There were also no laws back then against women raping or sexually assaulting any man or boy child at all--husband/relative or not--because of the assumption that males didn't need that kind of protection and females wouldn't do things like that

It wasn't until 2012 in America that the FBI changed the definition of rape from a man forcing a woman, specifically, into sex. And do you think that in traditional America a woman would be arrested for beating her husband or some other male? More likely he would be mocked and blamed for allowing it to happen (much like now, except maybe even more so)

So in the end it still balances out

No law; socially; is still better than having a law that forces you to accept to be raped and beaten

Firstly, what law forced wives to accept being beaten and raped anymore than husbands who had no way to legally defend themselves? Secondly, if we're talking about women in general--which I was in my OP--it was illegal for men to rape or assault females in general, and not illegal for women to rape or assault males in any circumstance. Even if you were to discount "marital rape", that still would not make it worse for women, no matter how you try to twist it

I had a old 1923 law code. I don't have it anymore

Divorce was illegal; and husband could use a wood ruler of max 30 cm to beat their wife. She couldn't divorce and she couldn't file for violence.

Marital rape was also legal and not good to divorce

And still a man could likewise not file for violence, and still a woman could beat any man with any sized object and not be arrested, and still it was legal for a woman to force a man or boy into sex whether he was her husband or not, and she would not be arrested for rape

So how were males more privileged--not being legally protected in any way from violence committed by any woman--while women were protected from forced sex by men who weren't their husbands or assault beyond spanking with a ruler?
