It's obviously a factor.

To call it the sole or even primary factor is fucking foolish.

The factors that led them to prison in the first place are far more impactful than the punishment-based prison system.

It's not like prison turns hardworkers with great personal values and bright potentials into scumbags. It just turns scumbags into bigger scumbags (specifically referencing violence and sex related criminals). That's not great, but again, it's not the prison system itself that is the greatest factor in the recidivism rate.

I'm not suggesting that there isn't room for reform in the US prison system. There obviously is.

For one, I advocate for the legalization of all drugs, an immediate end to the failed war on drugs, and the immediate release of all non-violent drug offenders across the country.

Err, the countries with the lowest actually try to rehabilitate their prisoners, and treat them like humans.

Maybe?

Hate to be the "citation" guy, but I'd love to see some proof.

Or really, I'd love to see a big picture snapshot of global recidivism rates. Obviously the context is quite complex and differing.

I mean, I do know that Scandinavian countries have super low recidivism, but to talk about and rank global prison systems is super complex stuff.

Our prison system is a fucking joke.

Agreed.

Though I still don't know if I'm convinced that modeling ourselves after Scandinavia is the way to go.

I think we could cut down recidivism for low level crooks: car thieves, hardcore shoplifters, minor drug dealers (I support drug legalization anyway), etc. if we focused more on rehab.

I don't think we can effect recidivism on extremely violent criminals and extreme sex offenders.

I think the two classes should be separated in completely different facilities anyway.

That's probably the best compromise: rehab focused, low security prisons for the low level, nonviolent guys -- and hardcore, supermax punishment prison for the monsters.
