Remember that it is useful as a trend line, which hints at gender segregation, both vertical and horizontal, but there is considerable disagreement about what factors should be included in the regression, and hence different figures will be produced. The only thing that is agreed is that the absolute value is always wrong in some way. In effect after the equal pay act this gap closed dramatically, but since the mid 80's the pace at which it narrows has been slow and steady. Also in the 70's many men in industrial work were loosing their higher paid heavy labour as borders opened to forign competitors, while also in the 70's women were getting close to parity in university graduation. However the male wage decline was faster than the female wage increase. Now male unemployment is higher than female in some countries (not included in the wage gap).

Wage gap cannot show discrimination even where it exists anyway. think of a world where male models are paid 50% of females and female sport stars are paid 50% less than male counterparts. Obvious discrimination, based on consumer preferance, but it would appear to be equal if there was an even balance of models and sports.

Check out the blog "offsetting behaviour" search for - The lesbian wage gap. He has others talking about the wage gap, but this is often not mentioned, in NZ/UK lesbians get $1.13 of the male wage (and in AUS/US they get less) - point is, can you try to explain this through a discrimination lens?

You should first make clear how the definition of equal pay does not imply that the genders will make the same at average, because it ignores non-sexist wage-defining aspects.

Then you should show multiple statistics and tell what methodology they used to get to their numbers. This is hard, because if you google after these statistics, you'll find a shitload of shitty pages without information, and very little useful source material. Even wikipedia doesn't seem to compare different studies.

I don't have more sources that weren't posted already.
