I think the 'listen and believe' mantra should be applied to this appalling case. The lies fell part when the women bypassed the source and sought to validate the truth by visiting the hospital ward where the girl was allegedly receiving treatment.

Surely this reminds us that:

liars can be very convincing
some women can be very manipulative
we are vulnerable when we feel sorry for "victims"
some liars have no concern for others affected by their lies

"Trust and verify" sounds like a better antidote than "listen and believe"...

No, no no. The real victims are all the women who might get cancer and who might not tell their husbands because their husbands might not believe them after having read about this case.
