I think the 'listen and believe' mantra should be applied to this appalling case. The lies fell part when the women bypassed the source and sought to validate the truth by visiting the hospital ward where the girl was allegedly receiving treatment.

Surely this reminds us that:

  • liars can be very convincing

  • some women can be very manipulative

  • we are vulnerable when we feel sorry for "victims"

  • some liars have no concern for others affected by their lies

"Trust and verify" sounds like a better antidote than "listen and believe"...

How about "listen and verify".

"listen and verify"

That's a good meme that needs to spread like a wildfire.

Yes I agree ;-) Trust and verify was Ronald Reagan's antidote to not trusting the Russians during the SALT II talks

"Listen and believe" remember.

This is what happens when you ignore objective reality based critical thinking.

Listen and believe is fine until it doesn't end at sympathy. Someone tells you something horrible happened to them? Don't immediately say "prove it". Show sympathy if you care about that person. Someone tells the police that something horrible happened to them? They should believe it only enough to launch an investigation to prove it.

"Listen and believe" should only exist on sympathy in real life, the internet no such rule should exist regarding strangers.

You make a claim, i don't even give you sympathy unless its somehow verified depending on the avenue for which it arises obviously.

No, no no. The real victims are all the women who might get cancer and who might not tell their husbands because their husbands might not believe them after having read about this case.
