While tech companies have been in a bit of an arms race to offer generous leave benefits, just 12 percent of American employees say their employer offers such a benefit.

I wager most of that arms race involves other things like more pay, better insurance, and more vacation. And while nice dont really translate to parental leave that well.

But there is plenty of evidence that offering paid leave to fathers encourages them to take more time off....

Makes sense. For a long time fathers have been expected to be the external provider (as in work outside the home). For the most part you cant provide if you arent at work. Giving fathers the opportunity to spend time with the child and still provide (via paid leave) is literally a win-win.

Part of thinks that the only people surprised by this are people who think that dads take pleasure in working outside the home and dont want to be with their kids. And dont hold your breath waiting for them to admit that their understanding has been challenged.

...which in turn fosters more gender equality at home.

Well damn. If you extend equal opportunity directly to men rather than expecting to trickle down from helping women first (or only), it works towards helping everyone.
