That was my gateway DV research paper.

I had always been told that men are 99% of DV perpetrators and 1% of victims. Then I heard it was about even.

Rather than just believe it I wanted to know what the evidence was and this was the paper I chose at random to read.

It was balanced, fair, measured what it said it measured and then checked it's own data. Did the mens and womens admissions of perpetrating violence match the womens and mens statements about receiving violence? Yes they did. Of the several that I read, they were all legitimate top class research.

So then I looked at the evidence on the 99% claim and it was utter crap. It was almost a master class in how not to do research.

they asked only women
they asked men and women different questions
the chose self selecting groups (from a feminist enclave or a battered womens shelter, or a womans only help line)
they redefined the word violence (now a disapproving tone or even the perception of disapproval was counted as violence)
they took the numbers of all violence victims (male and female) and said they were all female, totally erasing male victims and more than doubling the actual number of female victims.
they cited other "research" that, in itself, was a guestimate based on anecdotes.

I now have absolutely no confidence in any feminist statistics. And so far I haven't been surprised.

Ta for the link (even though it's 20+ years old), I'm bookmarking it. Why? Because finding stuff like this in Oz is very, very difficult.
