Do we need an International Men’s Day?

They were just talking about this on BBC Radio Scotland again; the consensus there seems to be 'no', judging by a couple of spots they have had on it. Once again, it was one of the male presenters who decided to 'put the boot in'; he said that [paraphrasing] middle class white men have nothing to complain about and have had it good for ages.

What struck me is how does that apply when you come to things like child custody? Surely even middle class white men supposedly having 'had it good' for ages is no reason not to address bias in child services and custody tribunals? Also how does that apply to micro-level social concerns such as health, stress, substance abuse, domestic violence and so on? Are white middle-class men somehow immune from these problems? Are they any more likely to seek help for them than other men are?

Anyway I am cancelling my TV license shortly, because I am so tired of the bias from the BBC; they were meant to present both sides of an argument, a serious requirement in what has been a two-party poltical state for generations.

Pay and careers is the reason why men are doing so great?

Does this person honestly believe that I put my foot down and demanded that I be the primary provider while my college educated wife be the primary caregiver to our children?

How utterly absurd to suggest that my partner in life had no imput in how we were going to manage our future affairs.

What a fucking joke that my life is being appraised by gender studies students that have probably never been in a serious relationship, don't have children, and have no fucking idea how those things are managed between grown adults, but don't let that stop you babies and lesbians from telling me how my hetrosexual relationship with the mother of my children works.

I think that the question being posed as a serious response to the day's mere existence shows that we need one. If it was International Potato Day, people who don't think we "need" that would more or less just ignore it. But if its men, it becomes a huge question and controversy. Because the question being posed isn't "do we really need it?" but rather "do men really deserve it?" Or perhaps, "Is it bad to give this to men?"

Of course the answer to both is yes.
