Gormlessness has not always been the only model for a typical boyhood. The twentieth-century’s Nigel Molesworth and Just William may have set the mould for the twenty-first century’s Horrid Henry; but it was allowable in my shorts-clad boyhood to have both muddy knees and a paperback in your pocket. A boy in the 1950s would not be embarrassed to be good at school. I enjoyed cricket and football and conkers and bikes; but I also liked books, singing in the choir, acting in school plays and kissing girls (where are you now Margaret Claydon?) ... [It was not] expected or allowed that, by reason of his genitals, a boy acquired an automatic pass to be cheeky to his parents and teachers; or to fail to tie up his shoe-laces; or to neglect his homework.

This is it exactly. Feminists always go on about a "boys will be boys" attitude where the patriarchy winked and nodded at misbehavior by boys. This is a selective rewriting of history - if "boys will be boys" ever meant anything, it meant skinned knees and inkstained copybooks, not acceptance of low standards.

Heroic Single Mothers and you-go-girl schoolmarms have found that in the absence of male authority they can't manage boys. Their version of "boys will be boys" - the belief that boys are uneducatable little shits - is a projection of their own views onto a strawman version of how boys used to be brought up.

Reflections On The Boy Crisis

I graduated in 1964 from a mediocre high school in rural Virginia ... There was no “boy crisis.” The girls made better grades, the boys better scores on standardized tests. There was no yawning gap. In short, girls haven’t come up. They have always done well in school. Boys have gone down. Why?

Girls are more orderly, patient, accept rules with less resistance, and do their homework. They have better handwriting and cut pictures from magazines to paste into projects. They finish assignments on time. In general girls are easier to deal with, certainly for the female teachers who now are almost the only teachers.

There were men in the schools. We had a hard-eyed male principal, Larry Roller or, as we called him, Chrome Dome. You did not screw with Roller. He could, and would, expel on the spot any boy who seriously transgressed. (Girls just didn’t commit expellable offenses.) This of course meant that he almost never expelled anyone: We were teenagers, not suicides.

Discipline was not harsh. The boys clowned in class and engaged in pranks (I may know somewhat of this), but we knew where the limits were. There were a goodly number of male teachers, which helped us know the limits.

Further, parents would back up the teachers without question. If I had said, “Fuck you” to a teacher, the French Foreign Legion would have been my only choice. Facing my father would have been—how shall I put it?—unproductive.

Boys need someone who can control them until, in a few years, the internal controls are in place. Women can’t do it. Therefore we have police in the schools, and we drug boys into somnolence with amphetamines. Parents, instead of even trying to control their kids, will litigate.

In workhouses, the only people who were acceptable to beat were boys. This was codified in law.

The instinct of both men and women to capitulate to women's needs even if it means throwing men and boys under the bus, has clearly reached its reductio. And while I do not prescribe traditionalism in practice as the immediate solution to this, the collapse of traditionalist gender roles is absolutely to blame, has produced an unsustainable state of anomy within the male population, and so will itself collapse. If feminists knew what's good for them they would dread the day when their failing experiment comes full circle.

Well, if they knew what's good for them they wouldn't be feminists.

Selective interpersonal interpretations of feminine self empowerment within the confines of the family power structure is why this negative behavior propagates.

It has to do with the natural emotional manipulation of the female persuasion. Mothers tend to look down upon boys as they do men emotionally, naturally; as women tend to operate from an emotional point of view rather than a rationalist/survivalist point of view, but can control boys (often their own children) to a certain aspect by demeaning them through discipline and punishment or child abuse.

In most cases I would imagine that anger displacement is also a factor. Meaning that a woman who is angry, at; let's say her husband, would abuse her power relationship with her son and punish him for either something he isn't responsible for or discipline him in a more exaggerated manor then required for corrective action. Subconsciously the mother will always view the male child as the fathers offspring and will make certain assumptions based on her relationship with the father that may or may not be true. "You get that from your father's side of the family" may be an example of this subtle yet powerful aspect of the mother-son relationship.

Yes this can be child abuse. Yes, men can also do this. Yes, both men and women do share the same emotional and physiological/phycological traits (the Id if you will, even though Freud is pooh-poohed upon now)...I'm not just bashing all women or motherhood. Yes, plenty of mothers are wonderful, loving, caring people. And amazingly strong and vibrant women do amazing things everyday. However there is a pattern of maternal development in American society that deeply entrenches women into the primary role of authority during development.

A good example of this taken to the extreme would be Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Or perhaps Howard Hughes as a real life example of the extremities of this situation. It's really about control and how much of it the woman feels she has. Her "loving son" will quickly become "his child" (the fathers) when she can no longer control the situation though manipulation or punishment. Ask any teenage boy.

When he was a little boy in the 1980s, my own son was engrossed in his Hardy Boys adventures as much as he was with Batman on the telly

Back in the day the curriculum included books boys were interested in reading: now that the curriculum is all about women's feelings and books that speak to them, amazingly the boys aren't interested in reading at all.

Why do we treat boys as though they are naturally bad?

Because "Girl is Good" and boys don't act like girls.

[–]swingthat 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can just imagine the outcry if men start to commonly use the phrase "Girls will be girls" at the appropriate times

Boys are bad, m'kay?

Redundant question. One word answer.

Feminists.

"Why do we treat boys as though they are naturally bad?"

Because that's what feminism has taught us, and feminism is entrenched.

[–]Rethgil 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because feminists are messed up people, who transfer and project their many psychological problems onto men, as they need scapegoats.

Boys cut their own path, girls are compliant. Everything that has ever been invented and built and still is, is almost entirely by men, men who cut their own path and thought and acted outside the lines. We would still be living in caves and eating berries if not for boyish and male behavior and thinking.

Girls and women are compliant and conformist, which is why the government has pushed the Feminist agenda in our schools since the 1980s, filling our schools with idiot Feminist hag teachers who concentrate only on teaching girls. Only to create the illusion that girls and women are succeeding somehow intellectually by being given an 'A+' for being to what amounts to an obedient dog.

Then they graduate with their worthless social degrees and go on to do... nothing. Nothing of any significance and 95% of women continue to work in menial, soft, part time jobs that produce nothing. http://www.dol.gov/wb/factsheets/20lead2010.htm

50 years of Feminism and women have yet to invent or build anything of any significance. Meanwhile for the last 30 years, boys have been and are treated like criminals from birth because we are being groomed for a Communist future.

Or, and this is a thought, the modern world is just more accommodating towards girls right now. My friend growing up was raised by a single father who was a country redneck and his daughter was the go it alone do it yourselfer. She didn't care for the same things their dad did and so she would always be reading books while they'd go out four wheeling or shooting. I'm honestly not trying to just be contrarian here, but I never got that "girls are compliant" sentiment people seem to believe in. They certainly are when we've built a world around shit that tends to interest girls more, but that hardly speaks for their gender.

[–]Ovendice 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh- yes, well of course when it comes to how girls and women treat individual men they're spiteful and do the opposite of what you want and argue just for the sake of being spiteful and stupid, but when it comes to what the 'crowd' is doing, women have to conform like the human body needs air. Even if they're loners, they still have to dress and follow whatever is trendy and follow the herd.

Because masculinity is toxic. /s

Maybe it's the fact that we sit ten year olds down and demand that they do low level clerical work 8 hours a day, and medicate them into a haze when they get antsy.

Maybe, JUST MAYBE, that has something to do with it
