Nice to see the issue get some attention.

But it sucks that some quoted commentators invoke the common attribution trap where bad outcomes for boys are considered innate, while good outcomes are privilege. (And the reverse for girls: good outcomes=innate, bad outcomes=oppression.)

E.g.,

“The model in my mind, even though it’s not proven, is maybe boys are more likely to be subject to behavioral problems, maybe they’re born like that, and you can with parental investment and more resources fight those problems,” Ms. Bertrand said.

And a chicken-egg fallacy that boys suck because men suck.

But they said there were clues to why boys are extra sensitive to disadvantage. A big one is that impoverished households are more likely to be led by single mothers, and boys suffer from a lack of male role models. “It’s quite possible that daughters are drawing the lesson that I’m going be the sole provider and the head of the family and take care of everything,” Mr. Autor said. “Sons could be drawing the lesson that the men I see around me are not working or committed fathers. They’re doing other stuff.”

I am sorry. Most of this articles reads to me that boys to not resemble girls behaviour in school.

The gap keeps widening: They are more likely to be suspended, skip school, perform poorly on standardized tests, drop out of high school, commit crimes as juveniles and have behavioral or learning disabilities.

We have had enough news reports how 0 policy hurts boys (e.g. cracker in form of a gun suspension).

Now its the problem of the boys - their agression, while sports programs get reduced in favour of mental subjects.

This article just is a correlation for boys disadvantaged at school, but has nothing to say about the cause. It gives me the feeling that its the boys/parents fault, which to a certain extend is, but it misses the gender disparity in teachers and the feminine school environment.

I come from a very disadvantaged background. Trailer parks, food stamps, and the like. I never met my biological father. My step dad went to prison when I was 13. I agree with some of this article. I grew up thinking men were bad and women were good. I had to get screwed over multiple times before I even began to consider this might not be true.

That being said, when I think back to school, my most memorable teachers were the men. They were impactful to my life. But there were only two of them that I can recall (until high school with classes like wood shop being available). I am now what I would consider successful, middle class. I got a new car last year.

The female teachers probably had similar impacts on female students and there are way more of those teachers. We need to correct this gender imbalance in education and we do that by not demonizing males who want to work around children.
