I'm a single father with daughters. After reading this I've noticed I've done some of these things. I feel bad now

Don't feel bad, just use that as a way to change how you relate to your daughters. Feeling bad does nothing in the long run. Learn, adapt and be the best father you can.

The relationship of codependency is the most toxic. Treating a boy or adolescent as an emotional husband is one of the most destructive things a woman can do. It's not a child's job to dote on his mother like a smitten suitor - but that is exactly what many single mothers attempt to extract from their sons. It's a serious form of abuse, and it's a disgrace that society hasn't done more to intervene and stop this kind of behavior.

This article is drivel; nothing more than the ranting of a bitter person. What little truth can be gleaned from this is purely coincidental, and not an accurate portrayal of all single mothers. Surely, some single mothers are awful for various reasons. Some are spectacular. In general, being a single parent, with no co-parent is really hard.

I thought this sub was better than this. Come on guys, let's bury this trash.

Agreed. We don't need to go the feminist route of lumping all women into one group while claiming men are guilty of this as well.

I think equality means that both men and women can be shitty, not all, but some. It's a given there are shitty people out there, and we can't act like it is gender based.

Good read, and I can echo a lot of what's said, given that my eldest son came to live with me after he was a teenager. His mom was very toxic towards him and me, said a lot of things that shouldn't have been said.

Thoughts?

I replied to the original post before I saw your comment, usku. I'll repeat: I think the article is drivel. Equally disparaging remarks could be generally asserted about single fathers.

I'm sorry your ex was a cunt and I hope you were able to overcome this with your boy. Also, I hope you have-been/will-be fortunate enough to meet a good woman. They're out there. A good woman can show a boy how upstanding women behave; just like good men for girls.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, some the the article came across as anti-woman. There are reasons boys need a father, but some of the things make it seem like women are no good. The whole section about learning logic from the father, came across as sexist.

It is sad that the author went through the childhood he did, but not all single mothers are horrible people. Like you said, some of those things can apply to a single father too.

Oh hey, don't get me wrong I know there are good women out there. My wife is a great woman.

There are shit people of every gender and orientation.

Oddly enough, my wife sent me that article, mostly because she dealt with a lot of the questions my two sons had based on things their real mom had told them.

Wow. A lot of spot on stuff there. My stepson and his mother are "best friends". He grew up without a father at all. I come in the picture at 13 and he hated me. Coddling, anger control issues, no boundaries, etc. Not all of that list, but a good solid chunk of it.

Edit: And if I were to share that with my wife and her sister (both have boys, all with these issues, all criminals), they'd get pissed at me.

I concur 100%.

Check these images for instance, in every image the child is learning more useful things from his father.
