Warren Farrell used to be on the board of the NY chapter of the National Organisation for Women. Erin Pizzey started the first domestic violence shelter for women (and men) in England in the 70s.

I would guess that nearly everyone here supports gender equality. Where are you friends getting their information from?

People like that are just talking out of their arses, yes, there are some sexist assholes about but I call them out on it.

Unfortunately, if they've chosen that narrative and are running with that, there's little you will be able to do to convince them in particular. You could however possibly have a chance of convincing other people who think he's being a bit batshit.

One thing though, if this guy hasn't brought up any evidence to back up his claims, he needs to be the one to provide it not you being forced to refute his claims. It's like when you have arguments with religious people about god and homosexuality, if they make ridiculously outrageous statements. The burden of proof is down to them otherwise it's just lazy and half-assed cheating designed to throw people off questioning them any further.

I think the most important thing that you can do when discussing the men's rights movement with people who aren't well informed about it is to simply highlight the issues that the movement talks about.

Much higher rates of suicide for men than women

Much higher rates of homelessness for men than women

Much higher rates of occupational fatalities for men than women

Much higher rates of incarceration for men than women, as well as much lighter criminal sentences for women even when they have committed the same crime

Male-only selective service in the U.S. and outright military conscription in some countries

The Obama Administration's classification of all "battle-age" males (including young teenagers!) as "enemy combatants" & fair targets even if they are civilians themselves

The disparity in the way the public views sexual assault of women and girls vs. sexual assault of men and boys

Indifference to the ways in which the education system fails boys

Family courts that are heavily biased against fathers

Most of these issues stem from society having a utilitarian view of men, where their worth is directly related to the benefit that they provide others (especially women), while women are seen as having inherent worth. In addition, society, including too many feminists, are much less enthusiastic about freeing men from traditional gender roles, than they are about freeing women from theirs. A man can be considered a lout (not without reason) for expecting women to be submissive homemakers, but we have much less of a problem with expecting men to be stoic protectors and providers. If any of your friends respond to these problems by esentially saying "man up," I would bring to their attention that they are very much promoting "toxic masculinity."

Part of the problem is, the MRM isn't like feminism. Feminism is a all-encompassing ideology. Men's Rights, on the other hand, is just a list of issues which MRA's agree should be fixed. You can be a communist MRA or anarchist MRA, and every ideology in between. That's what confuses them - we're not a hivemind.

Point out that there's a large number of people describing themselves as Men's Rights Activists.

In the entire Canada, there's a huge number of shelters for women, but not one single feminist created a men's shelter. Saying the evil things they do about as many people as they do with as little basis as they have is evil, hateful and disgusting. It's something monsters and psychopaths do.
