"why are mens rights groups so angry about this? "

Well, clarice, imagine on mothers day, an ad by dove or new yorker that brings out all the girls that had their mothers not be present in their lives, that were abused, hit, violated, or such, and that just go:

"My dad never hurt me.

My dad never told me I was ugly.

My dad allways treated me like a princess.

My dad never taught me how to do makeup, because for him I was allways beautifull.

My dad allways took time after he came home from his 16 hoiur work day to at least spend one hour with me.

My dad never called me a whore, a slut, or tried to raise me into a proper woman.

My dad told me to just say no.

My dad was there when my mom decided I was too much of a problem to live with her anymore.

My dad cried when I went out for college.

My dad never raped me.

But my mom did.

Happy mothers day, Dad. "

Can you see how this mjight inflame certain opinions?

I recently lost my father, a respectable man who has taken care of me and my two brothers since our mom died nine years ago. Father's and mother's days were never really a big deal for us. After going to college I'd send a card and give a phone call, that kind of thing. Even now, it doesn't sting to see all the happy facebook posts to peoples' fathers.

What gets me, not hurt but angry, is the use of it to point to the "problems of fatherhood." I'm on the white house public email list, and I get a message from Obama addressing the problem of fatherless homes (in his defense, that's how he grew up...). Then it's the posts of "happy father's day to all the single mamas puttin' in double!". Then it's "let's talk about abusive fathers."

I could say "imagine if they did that with ___ day" but it shouldn't be necessary. We get one day, and it really is just the one, to honor the vital role fathers play in their children's lives. We get one day when men are actually applauded for something uniquely masculine -- and it's used to criticize, demean, and diminish them.

I've seen holidays used to raise awareness of the struggles of the people they celebrate. Mother's day is often used to highlight the difficulty of single motherhood; black history month commemorates the struggles of black America throughout our history and today; That's a good, constructive use for a holiday. I can support Father's day being used to raise awareness of the struggles of men in this country -- especially fathers -- but that's not what we see. We see it used to either give a nod and necktie to dad, or it's used to poke into the "problems of fathers" in this country. These problems, of course, being entirely the fault of the fathers themselves because patriarchy.

A holiday celebrating fathers is not the time to air your own daddy issues. It's not a time to, once more, make dads the butt of the joke. At the very least, it's a time to recognize the vital role Fathers have in their childrens' growth. With some effort, we can make it also into a time to recognize the struggles of being a father in culture that mistrusts, maligns, and minimizes them.

I've never used my mother's death to make a political point, and I won't do that with my father's. I will, however, continue to hold each of them up as shining examples of their kind, and as the outstanding counterexample to all of this.

This is probably the answer... its annoying but, yea, anything to sell more products. Thanks capitalism. Doing things for all the right reasons.

Edit: Also this website is probably just hoping to probably buy in on controversy... get web traffic and all that other bullcrap. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qd8E6m7S4g
