There is no doubt that the journalists and lawmakers are wringing their hands over this slight increase in female inmates. However the problem is of their ownmaking, and as a Wisconsin resident I've gotten to watch the whole drama.

In 2011, they decided to close the women's prison in Waupun and convert it to a men's prison to solve overcrowding problems without needing to build a new prison. Now that the only remaining women's prison is reaching maximum capacity, the lawmakers are panicking about needed to spend more money.

There have been articles here lately that when women's bathroom lines get too long they make the men's bathroom coed. If that somehow supports equality, they could put women in the men's prison too.

Actually, there was an article here too where some place made the men's and women's bathrooms for women only and the men use portable outdoor toilets. At least it would be consistent with what people already do, then, to put put only women in all existing prisons and put men outdoors.

Reminds me of a recent outrage in San Jose, CA. Apparently in that one city / Santa Clara county, persistent homelessness is (slightly) higher for women than men. It's unique in the country in that regard, with men orders of magnitude more represented in the population of persistently homeless.

So of course it's a huge emergency in San Jose to "helpthesewomennow!"

The same report that found women are slightly higher as persistent homeless also found that 69% of the overall homeless population are men. But that's not a problem.
