Anyone faced with this sort of thing should ask the employee to provide the request in writing with the understanding that you'll be taking it up with the gym management. You've paid to have access to the facilities and as long as you're not breaking the rules of the establishment you have every right to make use of the service you've paid for.

If it's a question of messing with your phone as you work out, get a workout tracker for your phone so there can be no question of the legitimacy of having your phone out while you're lifting. Many gyms have rules against taking photographs but few completely disallow smart phones on the premises.
