Recently, I have been looking for an apartment to sublet. What I have found very frustrating is that nearly every post from guys says "males/females ok" while 90% of post from women say "females only." How is this considered acceptable??
I expect many responses will be about safety, cleanliness, and comfort. But aren't those stereotypes?
"I would feel less safe around a guy" (men are violent) "Guys don't clean up!" (men are pigs) "I just wouldn't feel comfortable around a guy." (I'm just more comfortable around girls)
I look at it this way: What if instead of "females only," it said "whites only"? Surely, we would agree this is racist right? A person looking for "whites only" could justify it in the same way a person looking for "females only" could: "I just wouldn't feel safe," "They're messy," "I'm just more comfortable around my own kind."
I would simply like someone to explain to me how asking for "females only" is NOT sexist, because it seems to me the definition of sexual exclusion.
