Technicality.

The CDC is really reaching in disproving the observation of those who say "40% of rapists are women" by saying that "40% of rapes are perpetrated by women during the last year". The CDC is being accurate, but it is a strawman argument against those who don't make the mistake of the former statement.

There is a difference. The impact of either statement is the same, but they are technically different figures.

Well it's mostly pretty technical. The CDC are ashamed to be called out on this stuff because they know they got caught red handed promoting bigotry, so they put out this sort of correction that doesn't correct thing.

If you read it and understand it then there's "nothing to answer" as the lawyers would say. They actually cop to the charges against them but call out a few largely irrelevant technicalities along the way. So the short reason there's no counter argument is that the CDC didn't disagree with the MRA.

They just phrased the response to make it look like they did.

Their main point is that the figures don't prove 40% of rapists are women, only that 40% of the people who are raped, are raped by women.

Yeah.

Their other "problem" with it is that they pretend men can't be raped, but that answer makes them look like fucked up bigots so they soft pedaled that "correction".

They point out that the 79.2% as a figure for what proportion of the male rape victims were raped by a sole woman was based on the lifetime figures. So I guess their issue here is that maybe for some bizarre reason its a completely different proportion for the 12 month figures than the lifetime, but they (1) don't supply the actual figures for the 12 month period which they have access to, and (2) don't put forward any suggestion for why the proportions might be different. So that's bullshit.

Then they make the same point as the first one again, three different ways (their points B, C and D).

Then they point out that they skipped off their tables the results for the number of women "made to penetrate" (presumably zero) and the number of men raped by men... because the numbers were so small they considered them insignificant. But now they say well to be accurate you should have included the numbers we said were insignificant and therefore left out of the results. Of course including those figures would actually increase the proportion of male rape victims, not decrease it.

I don't know if the knuckle dragger that posted all this simply had no idea of math (I have two degrees in statistics by the way - not that you'd need it to comprehend the comments but I guess it helps). maybe they are just ignorant, but basically he's crowing about something that his own post shows never happened.

Of all the issues raised by the CDC none seem likely to reduce the best guess at the proportion of women rapists except the first. That's the fact that "40% of rapists are women" is not the same as "40% of people who were raped were raped by women"

Why? because it is possible that it's a tiny number of women doing a huge amount of raping whereas male rapists are plentiful but only rape like one woman each. this would lead to the proportion of female rapists being much lower than 40% although it would also mean that they were a much greater percentage of the worst kind of serial rapist.

My guess is that the reverse is probably true if anything. I would guess it is male rapists who tend to attack more different women than female rapists, and as a result the 40% low counts the number of female rapists, so for my money it's probably more like 50-50 between men and women. The CDC is correct to point out that their figures cannot answer this question (ie whether it's true that there's more female rapists or if it's true that only the most severe rapists are mostly women).

Do most people care about these subtle differences? No.

First the only source that the CDC said this is Futrelle so I'm not even sure the statement is real. Second this is an organization that uses a BS definition of rape in order to erase male victims, so I question their motives. As for their point: They are correct in that we do not have statistics for what percent of rapists over the last 12 months are women. That is entirely the fault of the CDC for refusing to investigate the matter. However while there are strong reasons why we would expect the proportion of self-reported victims to vary over lifetime vs 12-months, there is no reason to suggest that the percentage of men being raped by men vs. men raped by women would be substantially different, so although 40% isn't entirely accurate, it's likely not far off and it is the best we have until the CDC decide that we should stop ignoring female rapists and do some actual research. It's certainly far more accurate than the 98-99% that the CDC and feminists typically cite to.
