Dear MensRights,

First and foremost, I want to apologize for the lack of articulate or broad questions I want to ask, because I frankly don't know what questions I should be asking --- I would appreciate any advice on the following matter.

Seven months ago I had a one night stand with a friend of mine, and about a month later she told me she was pregnant. I didn't think much of it at the time, because I finished in a condom; looking back in retrospect, I did enter her again without a condom, so there's a chance I may be the father. With that said, I asked if it were possible for me to be the father to which she denies it, and says that she had sex with some other guy after me and he was more than likely the father.

Since that time 7 months ago, her and I have spoken on and off and I've suggested my support for her because, well, I want to be nice and offer support where I can ( as it turns out she may be a single mom ). Despite the chances of me potentially being the father, she has not asked for any support from me, has not asked me to come along to any of the check ups, and continuously references the alleged sperm donor and his parents as being scum of the earth.

Like most young adults, I don't particularly want to have a kid right now; but should the kid be mine, I'll do what I have to to take care of him.

I want to ask her for more information in regards to how she sure is that the child is not mine, and inquire further about the state of things without painting myself into a corner and taking care of a child that may not be mine ( I've heard horror stories of incidents in California in which the non-biological father has been held responsible for children ).

Likewise, I don't know what questions I should be asking her ( or myself ). Should I seek legal council? Is anyone familiar with the State of California's laws are in regards to Paternity? What should I be doing, aside from waiting for results once the baby is born in just over a month?

Thank you for any advice or suggestions.
