Ya know, I think one thing we gamers need to do is take back the narrative from people whose first run in with "gamer culture" was when Farmville came out.

Nothing against casual gamers, welcome to the community, stick around, but don't pretend you represent us. Don't pretend that because you know your way around a computer mouse you are somehow representative of gaming culture. At most, you're the fortunate outliers that get to rest in the comfortable cultural acceptance valley below only after we scaled the cultural rejection peak to make sure it was a worthy location to set up camp. Maybe one day your start in the valley will lead you to join us up high, but don't act as though reaching the valley is equivalent to reaching the mountain top.

I remember growing up in podunk nowhere hillbilly land, where my brother and dad would host gaming nights. We had the works, Monopoly, Risk, Guess Who?, Poker, Chess, Chainmail...

And you know what gaming culture was at that table? Mostly men and boys, with a few girls thrown in. I don't remember any adult women ever joining in our sessions, but we had kids from school regardless of gender coming over to slam pogs, pony up plastic money, lead armies to victory, paint miniatures, swing fake weapons around, everything. Grown men, too, ostentatiously there to supervise and chaperon, really there just for the restriction free and guiltless opportunity to scream "No, my Rings of Flame spell totally wrecked your troglodyte bandits, asshole!"

The closest thing to misogyny in early gaming culture that I can recall is when my mom would repeatedly come out to the shed we had turned into an impromptu gaming den to check up on us, and we'd (male and female alike) get tired of it and order her to either pull up a chair and join us, or not come out and bug us unless she had made scratch cookies and wanted to deliver them. (Maybe an early precursor to "Shut up and make me a sandwich," the "Sit down or make us some cookies?")

Now, my experience is just one of many, I'm sure, but frankly, I'd rather weigh in with my experiences alongside fellow lifelong gamers in determining what gaming culture is (hell, I wouldn't even be offended if someone olderschool than me told me to shut up and let the real gamers talk.)

As opposed to letting someone who didn't even know we existed until they discovered the Gamestop down the street wasn't in fact a butchery tell us what gaming culture is and how it is a boy's club so heavily laced with misogyny.

But you have to agree that not all girl gamers are like this. I know a lot and their all fun to play with and never attention seek. But it is true that a lot of them actually do i have seen it

The same kind of women have sneered at me for being a female into video games my whole life. I was the ugly nerdy girl playing M.U.L.E. on my friggen commodore. I got all the "LOL you're a boy!" bullshit from girls, while boys my age were largely accepting of me so long as I brought my game face to the LAN party.

Then THESE retards had to ruin it and now I get shit from BOTH ends. Other females like "OMG IM TOTALLY A GAMER GURL 2 LYK OMG" and men who are tired of them who chant "tits or gtfo" every time I turn on my headset. Way to fuck it up for everyone!
