The MHRM hasn’t contributed to developing critical masculinity studies of men.

They can't even get a speaker in a university half the time, much less a funded department to run experiments. Further more, the author is saying masculinity isn't real but its effects are. It's denying near endless studies in various fields of soft and hard science regarding sexual dimorphism. Saying that makes me wonder if they would even regard MRA studies at all if somehow classes and departments could be formed around them. I can see writing off soft sciences that are essentially philosophy that do not undergo the rigor or standards of the scientific method, but if they're denying even sexual dimorphism as a thing which exists and is in fact real...

It's a rights movement, concerned with men's health, and how their skewed rights and societal expectations of them harms "men’s relationships with their partners, children and friends." There's a reason that 'masculinism' is generally used as a joke; it's not meant to be a framework for logic or critical theory, it's concerned with immediate realities.

We are often told that women and men are different, but we share similar needs: to be loved, respected and included. Narrow definitions of masculinity don’t allow for this.

Many men adhere to common standards of masculinity because it is the societally acceptable way to be loved, respected and included.

If you want to change what's acceptable, great, but why is it men and masculinity is villainized for this when society as a whole largely benefits from men having those traits such as risk taking, such as competition, such as favoring women's needs, safety and interests (sexism)? Do you think a purely destructive trait would exist en masse for a species if it were not ultimately a boon for said species for a considerable length of time? Whether masculine values are still necessary or beneficial is moot (I believe they are). Denying that masculinity is real does not help men prone to it fight against it when it is detrimental to the individual.

Imagine the umbrage if someone claimed femininity weren't real and that drives to be empathetic or to maintain social cohesion or to have and raise children was simply a social construct. Acknowledging these values and drives being a major norm does not mean forcing anybody of any gender to adhere to them. It doesn't mean excusing them when they go to damaging extremes. For example not teaching laws on rape because it's "triggering" to law students being a damaging extreme of empathy, or being a doormat to achieve social cohesion, or spermjacking being a damaging extreme of the desire to have and raise kids. Most people agree these are bad. Are these toxic femininity at work?
