Women use their appearance and attractivity to gain from men, period. It's a choice women make everyday in countless contexts. Virtually every woman does it in one way or another. And it's definitely not oppression, especially not in the case described by this author. Gaining all sorts of benefits and headstarts by mere, passive presence is probably the queen of all female privileges.

When I read an article like this, by an obviously middle class or upper middle class professional woman (the author is a professor of sociology)--it seems to fit a pattern of female entitlement. Women are busy expressing outrage that the world is not fair--as if it is only or particularly unfair for women. Men exploit women. And it's as simple as that.

Women argue that they must be protected. The world must be made safe for women.

This line of reasoning (if it is even reason) is being allowed to run rampant in the media, unchecked and unquestioned for the most part, as if it were simply objective fact. This is the dangerous world we are living in today, as men. And we need to have good arguments and lines of reason for dealing with the flood of articles and opinion pieces such as this one that the media loves to pump out.

The world is not safe for people. Men are exploited and lose their lives--but for a certain breed of feminist writer, the exploitation of young women with degrees in finance attending parties in The Hamptons is more outrageous than the exploitation of men slaughtered on battlefields or in practical slavery in mines and dangerous industries in developing countries.

This feminist hegemonic discourse needs to be fundamentally interrogated. Thank goodness there are people working on that task!

Yes, I'm all about women having to pay the cover charge and buy their own drinks. And for what it's worth, I'm pretty sure that they're perfectly free to do that, just like any other woman who goes out on the town or on a date. Yet they don't, virtually none of them ever do. They take advantage of the situation and judge men by their wallets. But this woman jumps the shark of female entitlement by actually claiming that the perks offered up to some of the most beautiful women in the world are simply not enough. Seriously, drop this sociology professor off in a favela outside of Rio and tell her to open her fucking eyes. Some people have real problems and this isn't one of them.

The author complains that the middle class women and models are in a weaker position when approaching the fat cats that attend these parties. But she utterly fails to realize that middle class men don't even have a seat at the table. However unequal the power is in these interactions, the fact is that these women are being given an opportunity that would never be handed to any young man.
