Come on now, surely you aren't making an appeal to ignorance are you ? I don't know therefore racism? That's a logical fallacy for a reason. There could be many reasons why minority groups might not want to be firefighters. Personal choice, culture, misinformation about the career, health risks pertaining to firefighters, relatively steep requirements etc., and yes, even occasional discrimination. I'm fairly sure all of those and more are a contributing factor.

I can admit that racial/identity discrimination happens however discrimination is necessary in systems that require above average performance, unless you want someone's grandma rushing in to a burning building. The burden here would be to prove that discrimination is not based on reasonable criteria pertaining to the career and instead based on identity. Noticing a disparity and crying racism is intellectually dishonest and can actually distract from real issues that could help solve the problem, if indeed there even is a problem.

Again, I'm not saying racism doesn't exist. I even conceded that racism likely exists in firefighting. I am not willing to concede that racism is the sole culprit of the disparity. One thing that has come to mind though is why would any minority choose a career path if people are claiming that it's racist throughout? That would heavily dissuade me from choosing it. That could also be a factor for the disparity. That is one of the reasons I am very reluctant to call something racist when other explanations are plausible. If there is proof then I will stand side by side with people in calling it out. Absolutely. But calling things racist when they may not be actually does more harm than good. It becomes divisive and can lead to even greater disparity and distrust. Not exactly a healthy environment if unity is the end goal.

I haven't answered your question because I don't have an answer. I wasn't trying to dodge the question or ignore you. I'm saying that there are likely multiple reasons why that particular disparity exists, as I've already listed. It would require an unbiased investigation/research to find the reasons so we could address the core issues. Of which discrimination is one. Does discrimination account for the majority of the disparity? I don't know but I'm not satisfied with saying "DISCRIMINATION! NEXT CASE!" while ignoring other potential factors. I have no problem with minorities or women wanting to be firefighters (as long as they can meet the requirements) and am willing to back any laws or policies that would help to remove obstacles for them.

Apologies for the wall of text replies. You seem to be one of the few people who are willing to actually have a conversation without resorting to name calling or worse. I respect that. I might get a little testy from time to time and I see you can too but I have come to expect that within this limited medium of exchange. I always try to imagine things would go smoother if we were speaking face to face.
