Crosspost ""I don't expect men to support women's issues"" from /r/Feminism:

This was said to me by my liberal progressive HRC voting boyfriend.

As a man in society he does not expect other men or men on the whole or even the majority of men to support women's issues. Yet when put the other way around, he was shocked when I said that women shouldn't support men's issues.

This is our reality. Even our allies don't expect men to support women or women's rights yet expect women to support theirs.

ETA - My bf is not republican, nor conservative. The reality is however he is a man, an older man who was raised in the south. Which means that sexism is in the air he breathes like humidity. Casual sexism isn't just something only he demonstrates. I've experienced it from EVERY - yes EVERY - man in my life. My father, my teachers, all of my boyfriends, all of my male friends and all of my coworkers. Every single one. Without exception. No not all the time, but every single man in my life has said or done something sexist. More than once.

If you think that this is an issue that will simply be solved by breaking up with my bf, then you are simplifying things to the point of blaming him without any real reflection into the issue.

My bf and I actually had a long discussion about this and I opened his eyes to the problem. But it took that discussion to do it. It didn't happen because he just figured it out on his own. That's the reality of our world. That's the heavy lifting.
