My wife of two years and I have finally decided to pull the plug. We fucking hate each other.
We got married because she was pregnant 4 months into the relationship. Our daughter is a year and four months old now.
She's an attorney. Makes 100k a year. I write songs for a publishing company. I make 20k a year plus a few grand here and there doing other musical work.
My job is very sought after and not something I'm going to give up. I finally just became one of the 1% in my business, and I'd be a fucking idiot to stop now. Yes, it's low paying at the moment, but I could've made 200k with the song from today unknowingly. That's just the nature of the business.
BUT, I understand I'm gonna have to come up with some more cash to make this all work. Any advice is welcome in that department.
We split all the bills 65/35ish right now and in nashville that's still a lot.
Rent-$1750 Utilities-200 a month for Internet and rest Health insurance- $125 Day care - 600/month
Gas and living expenses aren't cheap either.
I assume I'm going to pay child support, have to get a new apartment alone, and pay it all.
How the fuck am I going to afford it?
I'm just curious how the rest of you do it.
Other than get two side jobs working at night and never see my child, I really don't know how to do this.
Thanks in advance.

Get a lawyer for sure., if you split custody 50/50 then she should be paying you child support.

Yes. It is based on income and potential income, needs of the child, and not on mom vs. dad. A lawyer can help you understand the trade-offs. Is she actually asking for child support? Maybe you can just work out an agreement that doesn't break you and also takes the needs of your child into account.

The legal concept is "imputed income" if you want to Google it. Yeah, a judge could decide you could potentially make $35K but this is still pretty small compared to $100K so it would likely reduce the child support paid to you assuming 50/50 custody. (You may also be eligible for alimony BTW). Regarding your daughter: my advice is to try to get what you truly think is best for her. If you think 50/50 custody is right then you should try to get it. If you think weekends is better for her then go for that. It will make a difference in child support. Just don't make her a bargaining chip, it's a dick move and the judge will probably figure it out anyway.
