I've been haunting this sub for the past few weeks, trying to figure out my own life choices and how to apply FDS principles to my current situation.
I left my long-term relationship about a year ago, went a bit lib-femmy and slept with a few LVM, before ending up in a LDR with a man I would classify as HV, although we've only been seeing each other for a few months so this remains to be seen. He is generous, thoughtful, funny, kind, etc. We are more-or-less aligned politically, ethically, morally, etc. We are older (late 30s/mid 40s) and each have our own kids. We are both American, but I live in Europe and he comes here for work regularly. He has flown out to see me on his own dime as well as seeing me while he's here for work, and I am confident he's showing me how much he wants to be with me. (I don't have the time or inclination to date around any more right now, so we are exclusive)
But. My life is complicated. I've met him while I'm still very much in the midst of dealing with my kids coming to terms with the split (I myself checked out of my marriage years ago, so I personally feel happy, calm and emotionally ready to be with someone new), my divorce isn't finalized, my financial future is murky at best (getting divorced in this country is very complicated and takes about a year, minimum). If I'm being brutally honest, I am probably not in the right place to be dating at all. I met him OLD while I was in a 'casual dating' mindset and didn't really plan to end up in any sort of relationship, but I like him, and here I am.
Realistically, the chances of us ending up together long-term are slim. Sometimes I don't mind too much - life is for living, and we enjoy each other's company, and there's technically no harm in this. But I am getting attached to him, and sometimes I am sad thinking about a life together that probably won't ever happen.
Should I stop overthinking this? We haven't been dating too long, our time together is fleeting with long stretches of being apart (we spend overnights and weekends away when we can, though). And for anyone worried that I'm his piece on the side, I've done my research on him and everything he has told me checks out with what I've seen on his social media and so on. I believe he is honest with me.
I don't feel like I am wasting my time with him - I already have children, and the distance between us means I don't get too distracted pursuing my education/career goals, or looking after my kids. If we were near each other, that might well be different.
TL;DR - Would you stay in this long distance relationship if you were in my situation? Sometimes I'm not sure if I'm setting myself up for serious heartbreak, or if this is an experience that will benefit me in the end.

Yes. You are overthinking. A long distance relationship is just perfect for you right now.
Personally, I would just focus on enjoying what you have, while working hard on improving your overall situation.
Even if it ends in heartbreak, you can only benefit from the lessons you will learn from this.
