Reminder: "love" isn't enough

In my pickmeisha days, I rationalized staying in relationships and situationships with LVM \"because he loves me\" and/or \"because I love him.\" We are indoctrinated into believing that love trumps all and that it's admirable to put love above all else. The truth is that love-- whether sincerely felt or disingenuously professed-- is NOT ENOUGH unless it's accompanied by consistently respectful treatment and reciprocal effort/investment. Men know that saying that they love you (or similar romantic statements) will get them far, and it's extremely easy for them to do. Even if they do feel genuine love for you, it doesn't mean they have the maturity to treat you well. Stay vigilant.

He's not too busy to text back. He's not having phone issues. He's just a LVM.

I've been listening to the book Attached on audible. I have an insecure attachment style, it sucks but awareness is important. So in working through this knowledge I'm now asking myself, is this actual chemistry and feelings or is this guy triggering my attachment system? This is working wonders for me. I also journal my dates and review for patterns.

Learning about attachment styles was life-changing for me too! It gave me so much clarity as to why I felt like I was in love with the NVM I dated in the past, even when they weren't physically attractive or intelligent lol. Their inconsistency and lack of emotional availability activated my anxious attachment. It's been helpful to me also to read about the psych research surrounding intermittent reinforcement, and how powerful it is in conditioning responses.

Ugh bread crumbing is the worst and unfortunately very effective form of intermittent reinforcement. I've learned so much since my narcissistic ex but it's still hard to apply what you learn. This community is so great for when I'm doubting myself or boundaries I've set. I come here and read for a bit and remember my crown.

PS thanks for sharing, this one hit me hard tonight, I needed it.

Glad it resonated with you, sis. I'm right there with you in terms of having a hard time putting into practice what I've learned here-- it's still a daily challenge to unlearn the old patterns and conditioning I have. I'm so happy I discovered this community too-- I actually created a Reddit account today just so I could join!
