I have experience with this. In my last super pick me relationship, my ex was working a dead end job making minimum wage, living at home, quit college like halfway through when we met 🚩🚩🚩I certainly ascribed to the libfem equality shit and believing in potential. He paid for the first two dates, we became official and he didn’t take me on another date for over a year. He loved park and gym dates and cooking at home because “restaurant food isn’t even good”. He made me split groceries every single time. For years. He once told me he ran out of money living at college and his parents had to bail him out, which made me think he was terrified of running out of money. Nevertheless he was extremely cheap, like, wouldn’t buy himself new underwear when his was see through, cheap. He went back to school and we lived together while we finished up. For years he made me split groceries even after we started our careers and he had disposable income. I think it was a combination of him being cheap (he refused to buy his other ex anything expensive when they dated) but also not wanting to financially invest in me. If I ever wanted him to pay for something I felt like it was hurting him somehow or he’d be offended. He was staunchly against expensive gifts. For Christmas one year he got me what legit looked like costume jewelry from Amazon. A man like that is awful to date. I made over double what he did and he felt emasculated, saying he needed to catch up to me and he wanted more money. I’d think, why? You’re still cheap af. There’s a difference between being smart with money and so cheap that it seriously inhibits what you do and stresses you out.
