As for an explanation, the article I linked effectively stated that the reason most men do not fight for custody is that usually after child support and alimony payments are weighted in, fathers, especially lower class fathers, don’t have much monetary funds left to engage in a legal battle for custody. The “lack of interest” is basically a form of surrender.

As for solution, abolition of the alimony system, reformation if the child support system, ending the practice of harsh punishments for missed child support payments (the enforcement of the current system is way too militant and unforgiving), and establishing 50/50 default custody in uncontested cases to lessen the extent of child support payments required. If we can eliminate the financial barriers, a lot more men would be able to properly fight for custody.

Not just lower class men. Lower middle class men can't afford to fight for custody either.

Honestly, packaging up the division of child custody with the separation agreements as the parents terminate their marriage is a ridiculous, commodifying practice. The time allocated of children shouldn't be determined in the same proceedings as the custody of golf clubs and big screen TVs.

Children need both of their parents freely available in their lives, that is a fact demonstrated by every single meaningful study into the subject, and that same fact is why feminists are pivoting their rhetoric on child custody from "custody cases don't slant against men" to "custody cases slant against men because they dont want custody".

Trying to suggest custody resolution isnt slanted is a losing game, a completely lost battlefield, so now it is being reframed as yet another moral failing of men.

If you need a good retort for these bullshit arguments about custody settlements, ask the presumed-but-not-necessarily-feminist arguing with you if they think the demonstrated trend of women choosing not to go into STEM is truly and wholly because of their wants/desired choices and completely uninfluenced by any other external factors.

You know they dont think it is. I dont either! This is the one place I have actually broken through "the wall" with a few people. It's the weakest link in the armor of the arguments around this topic.
