Gotta be able to trust said friends. When too many people catch wind and spread rumors you'll become a target. Look at what happens to people who won the lotto, even if they were generous with family and friends. And those can sometimes even be smaller amounts of money, but people will still play their games to try to part you from it.

People change when money gets involved. I would only every reveal it to my parents.
I had a fallout with a childhood friend of mine, who knows how much I make as i told him when I started the new job. But he then held it over my head when he asked for 'financial assistance.'
There are plenty of stories about lotto winners and how people started treating them worse when they found out about them winning.
Never tell anyone your salary.

I live in a Latin American country, you better hide that wealth and be discrete unless you want to be kidnapped or blackmailed. And my former school mates who got money and married? They're seen as a human ATM by their wives. It's much better to appear poor and have 2 true friends than people hanging out with you out of financial interest.

It's not always because of directly talking about finances. Your financial situation can also be found out indirectly by your clothing, cars, and your social media/internet presence, etc.

Went to the bank once because my pay hadn't gone through. Bank teller was neutral until she looked up my details and saw my pay that was going in per month.
Her attitude literally changed instantly and she started small talk and asking what I did for a living.

I know a woman like that. Divorced in her late twenties there was a guy that wanted to date her and this woman looked down her nose at this man. I heard her say a number of times I'd never date Dave.
Six months before the child support ran out, she was in her mid-forties all you would hear out of her was if I can marry Dave I'd be set. You see Dave has maxed out his 401K, has a fully vested pension and makes around 150K a year.
I have no idea why she got so upset when Dave no longer had interest in her. She didn't want anything to do with him thirteen or fourteen years before. I wonder why Dave had no interest in a 45 year old woman who was sixty pounds over weight.

Two thots that were into me confessed that when we first met, they thought I was born into wealth. I was in fact piss poor but I think they thought that because I avoided using slang or swear words, was relatively well read and very seldomly drank, unlike the scumbags they used to hang out with. Now that I think about it, they were very fond of me at the beginning, and later on tried to use my as their source of income when they discovered I wasn't a Rockefeller Jr.
