1. Never put yourself in a position where someone else can determine your fate.

  2. Never put yourself in a position where your success is dependent on someone else's integrity.

These are totally different principles, though it might seem like they are similar.

Never put yourself in a position where someone else can determine your fate - that means never get in trouble with the law (a cop, prosecutor or judge determines your future), in trouble at school or work (they can put you at financial risk, mess up college prospects, etc), put yourself at-risk with women (they can say whatever they want and they will be believed), never hang around with "risky" friends that might commit minor crimes, drink while drive, etc.

Never put yourself in a position where your success is dependent on someone else's integrity

Business contracts!! If you start your own business, get it in the contract. Never rely on someone's word for your own success. Most people have no relationship with the words coming out of their mouth. Integrity is key in life, but almost no one has it. Never trust anyone - get it in writing.

You can be different: Always do what you say you're going to do and by when you said you were going to do it.
