I'm actually grateful for some of the women in my family. Both my grandmother and mother basically told me a lesser version of this. I got into a fight with my sister (that she started, by hitting me). Being 6 or 7, I assumed that since she hit me first, it was ok to hit back.

My grandmother saw the fight and pulled me aside, and said: "You can't hit her back, even if she hits you."

I was upset, and feeling that that was unfair, I told her so. In response, she told me something to the effect of. "I know it's unfair, but the world won't care. If she says you did something mean to her, it won't matter if you were in the right. They'll punish you anyway."

For a long time I was upset at them, thinking they agreed with this, but after a while I realized that they didn't. They were warning me about harsh reality. Believing the world is just won't make it just; and living as if the world behaves as you wish it would instead of the way it does is a recipe for disaster.
