I tried this awhile back, to see what would happen. A guy I know is pretty chill. We hang out and talk at work pretty often. He and I get along really well.
One thing I respect about him, is that he's seemingly pretty intelligent. He's fresh out of university and one of our newer guys. I'm the old crusty fucker. The dude is a progressive/lefty, but I respect that he and I can hold conversation and still remain friends even though we disagree.
Well, awhile back I decided to hang out with him and a group of his friends. I had intentionally decided to hang with these people, because I don't have a lot of social groups where my primary residence/work is. My regular social groups are two states away, and I only get to hang with them about once every 2 or 3 months when I get to travel back there for week or so at a time.
So while I'm hanging out with this dude and his circle, I'm seeing a lot of the same things you pointed out in your post (and what others have pointed out here).
People who have no goals in life. People who haven't accomplished anything. People who have no purpose. They don't seem to have any sort of interests outside of games, movies, and TV.
The ones who have girlfriends brought them along. The conversations of the night were mostly about sex. These are late 20's and early 30's people. Yet we're sitting around a living room, and they're dominating the conversation about how one dudes dick is apparently bigger than the other dude's dick, but it tastes a certain way.
They go on about how they could definitely do a blind taste test and feel test to find their boyfriends.
I'm just sitting here in the corner, like, "I made a mistake coming out here."
I had hoped there would be some intelligent conversation. These people were supposedly university educated, young working professionals. The kind of people I would have thought I'd have found a shared interest in.
Instead, they just drank themselves into oblivion, talked about cock all night, while the guys sat there like good little cucks.
I don't drink alcohol any longer, so I ended up leaving before everyone got so blacked out the shenanigans started, which I'm sure they did.
My social group that I see on a rotating basis of once every couple of months or so, is sort of falling apart, too. A couple of them have moved across the country, so only a couple of them are left. We all stay in touch, but there won't be any hanging out in groups like we used to.
My brother is part of that group, so I feel like eventually it will just be the two of us.
People are so fucking mediocre it's painful. And this coming from someone who is admittedly average. I don't claim to be a genius or some goddamned savant -I'm just an average guy. People are so damned below average now, it's pathetic.

Good comment man. You and I are very similar. I'm extremely career focused right now. I don't make a ton of money, but my career is one that rewards in other ways. I get to see and do incredible things and be a part of making an impact that very few people ever get near.
I've progressed pretty well, and am extremely proud of that.
There are even people within my career who don't take it seriously, and end up giving into those distractions. They just don't care. They give into mediocrity and are okay with just existing and being on cruise control.
I'm just sitting here like, "Do you not realize how incredibly fortunate we are to be doing what we are doing? You're just going to shit all over it by being a lazy sack of shit?"
I'm going on a bit of a rant here about work -but there are folks who would fucking kill for an opportunity in my line of work, who are in tune with what you and I are talking about... and the distracted snowflakes who are okay with being average are perfectly okay with just squandering that opportunity... because they do the bare minimum to not get fired.
They want nothign else.
